Future Research Solutions for Defense Addressed in Energetics Symposium

La Plata, Maryland, November 1, 2011 – “There are emerging threats that need technical research solutions,” The White House’s Dr. Arun A. Seraphin, Deputy Director for Defense Programs in the Office of Science & Technology Policy. These include solutions for advanced missile technology, anti-access/denial and traumatic brain injury, as he also indicated, in his keynote address to the 2011 National Capital Region Energetics Symposium, 1 November 2011, at the College of Southern Maryland.

These and other areas requiring research solutions were the subjects of the two-day symposium on the research and development of energetics, encompassing explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics. It is an R&D field, impacting almost every aspect of defense, from developing smaller and lighter munitions with tailored effects, to detecting threat explosives, and understanding blast-induced, traumatic brain injury.

One key area addressed was unmanned systems, with Rear Admiral Millard Firebaugh USN (ret) calling for “weapon technology that is more optimal for these unmanned systems than the re-application of existing weapons from manned systems.” Notably, such munitions might have “warheads specialized for different targets so that a UAV can attack with whichever weapon is most appropriate to the specific target.”

DR. JERRY FORBES AND CHRISTOPHER MILBY PRESENT AT THE 17th BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY’S TOPICAL GROUP ON SHOCK COMPRESSION OF CONDENSED MATTER

Waldorf, Md., July 13, 2011 – Dr. Jerry Forbes and Christopher Milby recently attended the 17th Annual Biennial International Conference of the American Physical Society’s Topical Group on Shock compression of Condensed Matter. The scientific focus of the conference was on fundamental and applied research topics related be dynamic compression of condensed matter. This multidisciplinary field of research encompasses areas of physics, chemistry, materials science, energetic materials, mechanics, geophysics, planetary physics, and applied mathematics. Experimental, computational and theoretical studies all play an important role. The conference started with registration and a welcome reception on Sunday afternoon June 26 and went through Friday July 1, 2011. With over 600 registrants, this was the largest conference to date by the SCCM Topical Group (TG).

ETC’s Christopher Milby and Dr. Jerry Forbes were co-authors for the following talks that were given during the conference:

  • “Effect of Shockwave Curvature run Distance Observed with a Modified Wedge Test,” Richard Lee, Robert Dorgan, Gerrit Sutherland, Ashley Benedatta, Christopher Milby.
  • “High Strain Rate Behavior of Polyurea Compositions,” Vasant Joshi and Christopher Milby.
  • “Solid and Liquid Equation of state for initially porous aluminum where specific heat is constant,” Jerry W. Forbes, E. R. Lemar, and Mary Brown.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND ENERGETICS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM PROVING SUCCESSFUL

La Plata, MD, July 15, 2010 – The College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Energetics Scholarship Program is off to an energetic start with the recent graduation of nine students from the first group of fifteen students. The remaining six students are anticipated to graduate this summer or fall, and all students are focused on attaining degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM).

A graduation dinner, hosted by the CSM Energetics Scholarship Program Coordinator, Bobby Marino, was held earlier this summer at Crabby Dicks in Port Tobacco, Maryland. The scholarship program is funded by the Energetics Technology Center (ETC) in La Plata, Maryland as part of its commitment to support efforts which increase students’ interest in STEM education and careers. Retired Admiral Tom Donaldson, USN, President of ETC, was on hand to present graduation certificates.
