DR. JERRY FORBES AND CHRISTOPHER MILBY PRESENT AT THE 17th BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY’S TOPICAL GROUP ON SHOCK COMPRESSION OF CONDENSED MATTER

Waldorf, Md., July 13, 2011 – Dr. Jerry Forbes and Christopher Milby recently attended the 17th Annual Biennial International Conference of the American Physical Society’s Topical Group on Shock compression of Condensed Matter. The scientific focus of the conference was on fundamental and applied research topics related be dynamic compression of condensed matter. This multidisciplinary field of research encompasses areas of physics, chemistry, materials science, energetic materials, mechanics, geophysics, planetary physics, and applied mathematics. Experimental, computational and theoretical studies all play an important role. The conference started with registration and a welcome reception on Sunday afternoon June 26 and went through Friday July 1, 2011. With over 600 registrants, this was the largest conference to date by the SCCM Topical Group (TG).

ETC’s Christopher Milby and Dr. Jerry Forbes were co-authors for the following talks that were given during the conference:

  • “Effect of Shockwave Curvature run Distance Observed with a Modified Wedge Test,” Richard Lee, Robert Dorgan, Gerrit Sutherland, Ashley Benedatta, Christopher Milby.
  • “High Strain Rate Behavior of Polyurea Compositions,” Vasant Joshi and Christopher Milby.
  • “Solid and Liquid Equation of state for initially porous aluminum where specific heat is constant,” Jerry W. Forbes, E. R. Lemar, and Mary Brown.

Papers based on the material in these talks will be published in the conference proceedings at a later date.

In addition to the talks listed above, Dr. Forbes was requested to provide a brief talk prior to the presentation of the George E. Duvall Shock Compression Award which was presented to James Johnson, Sandia National Laboratory (retired). Dr. Forbes was asked by TG Vice-Chair Tracy Vogler to provide this talk. Dr. Forbes previously, in 1985, actually was elected the first Secretary/Treasurer of the TG and served in that role until 1991. He had written a plenary paper on the history of this TG for the 2001 meeting, and was a PhD student of Professor George E. Duvall which allowed him to speak personally regarding Professor Duvall whom the award was named for.

During Dr. Forbes’ talk, he provided insight to the attendees about how the APS shock compression science award was originally set up in 1987 and eventually renamed the George E. Duvall Shock Compression Science award. Professor Duvall’s reputation as a leading scientist and excellent manager of Shock Physics endeavors was well established by the 1960’s. Professor Duvall believed one of his important roles was to mentor others. Dr. Forbes described select interactions with Professor Duvall by himself and others that demonstrated this mentoring role. Additional brief comments were made on Prof. Duvall’s outside activities to show that he was a well rounded person.
